SMILE & RELAX was made after my graduation from art school.
I was then, as I am now, interested in the interchange of photography and film.
Armed with rolls of quarters we slipped Claudia Obrosey,
a dance major who was our own Edie Sedgwick, into a photo booth machine at the local pin-ball arcade.
At first the background noise was a distraction, but it ultimately worked to the film’s advantage.
Claudia launched off into a series of vignettes that were edgy, irreverent, and about love.
I can’t image young people this age today being interested in anything else.
The full short is now an app for the iPad.
It includes the film, the "script", an essay, a PBS interview and stills from the film.
